On Thursday the 18th of July 2019, the Department of Tourism Economics and Management of the University of the Aegean, Greece conferred an Honorary Doctorate to Captain Aysha AlHameli, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the ICAO - International Civil Aviation Organization and Candidate for ICAO Council Presidency, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the air transport sector and its impact on economic and tourism development.
Captain AlHameli became the first female pilot in the UAE at the age of 16. In 2009, she was appointed as the first Representative of the UAE at ICAO, the specialized organization of the United Nations in air transport matters, at the age of 28 thus becoming the youngest Permanent Representative in the history of the organization. Since then, she has served in various important positions within the organization warmly supporting among others the “Dreams Soar” programme to support children interested in a professional career in air transport. Moreover, Captain AlHameli has actively participated in many initiatives highlighting the important role of women in aviation. The conferment ceremony of Captain AlHameli took place at 13:00 Greece time in the Auditorium of the University of the Aegean, at Michalion Building in Chios.
