Vision and Mission of the Department
The Department of Tourism Economics and Management is the newest Department of the University of the Aegean. However, its foundations are based on the academic legacy of the long tradition of innovation, interdisciplinarity and problem solving of the society of the University of the Aegean and on the long scientific and applied experience in tourism that comes from the establishment of the first Postgraduate Program in Tourism in Greece (since 1998) and the Laboratory of Tourism Research and Studies of the School of Business in Chios (since 2000).
The Department, faithful to the responsibility that stems from its geographical position but also from its academic-scientific heritage, serves the following Vision:
«To function as an academic channel, through which the interdisciplinary knowledge-innovation and the academic excellence in the field of tourism will be channelled to the local, national and international society and economy.»
The Department, in order to achieve the above Vision, has as Mission:
«The promotion of interdisciplinary research, the development of free and critical thinking and the transfer of knowledge in the field of tourism, in order to positively influence all stakeholders at a local, national and international level.»
The Mission of the Department is developed in three axes:
- Adoption of a student-centered educational process, which, respecting the special needs of the students of the Department, focuses on the generation and transfer of modern scientific and applied knowledge.
- Creating an academic community which, based on the free thought and open communication, will promote interdisciplinary research and its results in the society and the social partners.
- Synergies with institutions, organizations, companies, and academic institutions at a local, national and international level in order to transform the entire tourism industry through the attraction of talents, the development of innovative ideas, the strengthening of entrepreneurship and more.

Strategic goals
The strategic goals come to implement the Vision and the Mission of the Department, always in function and in full coordination with the strategic planning of the University of the Aegean. The strategy of the Department is re-examined at regular intervals with a simultaneous effort to adapt to the changes taking place in the external environment of the University of the Aegean, such as ongoing institutional changes related to the higher education, the long-term financial crisis and its impact on the income of the families of active and potential students, the COVID-19 pandemic and more.
The strategic objectives described below are based on an effort to capitalize the Department's strengths and to take advantage of the opportunities presented in both the national and international academic arena.
- Creating an appropriate academic environment with a focus on the student and promoting his/her academic development
- Strengthening the extroversion and internationalization of the Department
- Enhancing research and innovation, and
- Connecting with the local community and supporting the prosperity of the country.
